The Day of Japanese Chat and Sake Galore

My wife and I spent a bunch of time hanging out with a mutual friend of ours and an additional friend visiting from Japan. It was fun being able to speak Japanese between the 4 of us. Definitely looking forward to future conversations as my language skills increase further.

Another fun note was that we all discovered a pretty nifty Sake Brewing company located not too far from home in Forest Grove, Oregon called Sake One. They were doing a sake tasting event today so we all took a drive out there and got to sample 7 different kinds of sake. There was only about 2 of the 7 that I actually liked, but it was still an interesting experience. They also gave us a tour of the brewing facility. While not as educational as it could have been, there was still some tidbits of knowledge that I took with me as we finished the tour.

One of the most interesting aspects was that they do their own rice milling. They apparently mill the grains of rice down to roughly 60% of their original size. I picked up a handful and they were quite a bit smaller than your typical rice grain but very smooth and high quality. It was also quite interesting learning more about the aspects of koji and climate control.

If you happen to live anywhere near the area I'd recommend checking it out sometime. かんぱい!

  1. I wonder if you'd mind writing a post giving some background info about yourself. I think it would make for interesting reading. Such as: why are you learning Japanese? Is your wife Japanese or do you have any Japanese friends? How often and why did you go to Japan? How often to you study? Have you ever taken any formal classes? Are you planning to take the JLPT?

    Cheers!
